"House of Wax" (2005) Focused Analysis

Captions

The writing stylisation is conveyed through a jagged, scribbled/scratched effect in lower case letters placed against a black background with the text and detail being portrayed in Hot Colours (Deep Yellow, Orange etc.). This has a strong contrast against the black background so it draws the Audience to the imagery, this being emphasised by a Flame-Styled Effect overlaying it so there is a somewhat burning effect. This specific stylisation is utilised as it uses the Theme of the Film to interlink the portrayal of the captions without veering completely away from the Dark Tones and Themes. By creating this burning effect it plays on the idea of melting wax which is the main theme of the Film as a whole. This is repeated throughout and applied to each caption to follow continuity of the Trailer and typically follows the conventions of a Horror Trailer by not only the repetition of the same style but of the eerie and sinister stylisation of the caption screens.

Dialogue and Sound

Within Trailers of the Horror Variety, the lack of dialogue helps gain momentum, builds on the Audience's suspense and rises the Tension Factor, this Trailer follows them conventions. It also allows the plot to left more open, leaving the characters' fate unknown and allowing us to not get so emotionally attached to them so it urges the people to go watch the Movie. The majority of the Vocal override which does occur within the Trailer is mainly ambiance from various scenes which include various slashing, heavy breathing, screaming, machinery mechanisms, and running. There is dialogue exchanged in various points within the Trailer which accentuates some minor jabs at the plot of the story without giving too much away yet enough for the Audience to understand the basic flow of the Trailer. The dialogue included is minimal and is widely ranged and varied throughout the Trailer. It features a strong play on the element of silence so that tensions rise within the Audience to get them on edge as to what will happen next and frighten them, this being very conventional of the Genre. In particular from 0:34 seconds to 0:45 seconds the volume of the piece is taken right down to only hearing a faint and not hugely frequent thud perhaps suggesting a heartbeat to parallel that of the Audiences rising suspense. As the Trailer begins to progress, the intensity and frightening factors begin to come to life through multiple screams from different Characters as well as noise from the ambiance to scare its Audience. Overall, the Trailer plays on the conventions of a typical Horror Trailer with its own twists and turns along the way to make it solitary and stand on its own as a Plot and Trailer.
